We’ve hit Chicago and now it’s time to go to the Motor City… fittingly in the Pontiac Vibe. Here, Sara and Gretchen pack the car.
Thank you, Al and Joan Stauffacher, for letting us stay in your lovely lake home one hour from our destination.
And our destination is P3A (a.k.a. Detroit Palmer Park Preparatory Academy).
7th and 8th grade language arts teacher, Sherry Andrews, helps students during her lunch hour–complete assignments and do extra studying. She decided to give Wireman out to a few boys and see what happened.
Turns out, in just a few days the lunch study group grew from a handful to around 20. Ms. Andrews credits the boys with spreading the word in the lunchroom. We spent four hours at the Academy, interviewing Ms. Andrews and the boys and giving them a crash course in how to write their own comics. It was a great day! Here’s a quick photo tour of our day. Below, Gretchen shows our tour guide, Naquan, how to operate her camera.
Turns out, the school has its own tech crew!
Suddenly there were five camera operators, which was a good thing, because I was making some really memorable points.
In addition to being interviewed, there was pizza…
And Wireman bracelets were distributed.
Ms. Andrews gave us an amazing interview! Here’s just a taste:
You can see more videos from our Wireman adventures on my YouTube channel, youtube.com/suestauffacher. Thank you Sherry!
And so did several of the boys….
Two very talented artists decorated the poster…here is Jamal with his illustration
It was such a memorable day that we had to celebrate! We drove all the way to Austintown, Ohio, and found the most amazing ice cream parlor!
Thank you, Detroit Palmer Park Preparatory Academy–students, teachers and administrators, for welcoming us into your school.
