We finally arrived in New York on Wednesday night after a three hour drive from Danville, PA. And what a gorgeous day it was! Sunshine and more sunshine!
We checked into the Howard Johnson on the corner or Boston and Tremont in the Bronx. Highways and trains surrounding us and providing the true city experience. We hit the sack to prepare for our first New York City school, Mott Hall III.
And boy oh boy, they were equally as prepared for us to arrive!
Welcome signs and smiles greeted us as we entered Mr. Andrew Hendricks’ middle school classroom.
We were sure to start things out right and reciprocate by giving Mr. Hendricks an apple since he is such a great teacher! Mr. Hendricks is a long time college friend of Sara’s and has been a Wireman supporter for quite some time. His students were so excited to meet me and had lots of insightful questions about Wireman and the writing process in general.
With one 55 minute period over, we reset and got ready for his second period! That’s right, we did two in a row. Lots of Wireman love at Mott Hall III.
Mr. Hendricks’ students were a great way to welcome us to New York City. Their energy was contagious, and it left us all feeling optimistic that Wireman WILL find a publisher.
After the presentations, we got a chance to sit down one-on-one with six students and explore their thoughts on Wireman. Wow! What a genuine group of youth!
They were willing to dig deep and share with us their connections to Wireman’s characters and stories. We could not be more grateful! Thank you!
Stay tuned for video clips from Mott Hall III students soon! Until then, catch up on our current clips on my YouTube channel: youtube.com/suestauffacher
One more school to go on Friday, and then we head off to the New York Public Library where Mr. Hendricks will be joining me on stage to chat with Betsy Bird about Wireman. What an adventure!
