If it’s Tuesday, this must be Austintown–Austintown-Fitch High School to be exact.
Wireman is set in a high school, so we were anxious to see how high school students felt about the story. We’re so grateful to teacher April King for introducing us to her 9th grade students and sharing her thoughts on Wireman with us. Listen to this excerpt from our interview with Ms. King and stay tuned for more on my YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/suestauffacher.
The students made some of the most amazing posters for us. This one that welcomed us to the classroom had key quotes from all eight issues!
Look for their movie posters on my Sue Stauffacher Books’ Facebook page, where social media maven, Sara Schneider, is making a collage for us. Did you know that Denzel Washington, Jaden Smith and the Rock are being considered for the film? Sara told the students all the other cities are so much bigger than Austintown, they had to represent their city well–and they did indeed.
I loved all the artwork, but we were especially struck by Terrence’s drawing of Andre. He seemed to get Andre’s expression so well…as if, in this drawing, Andre is wearing his heart on his sleeve.
We had the usual fun–posing with the comics and signing books–and got to listen to many story possibilities. The young people on this trip have so many predictions about what will happen and they’re ingenious, I tell you. It makes me want to get right back to the drawing board.
We had to say good-bye too soon, but we’re hoping to stay in contact. I was honored by the way we–and Wireman were treated in Ohio. Thank you, students, teachers and administrators!
